A NEW residents’ action group is calling for a pause on windfarm decisions as locals give a resounding ‘no’ to the latest turbine plans. Energiekontor UK held two exhibitions last week to present its plans for a five-turbine windfarm at Fenrother, just south of Longhorsley.
North Covert: Met mast granted, wind farm application expected

No proposal, planning application or public consultation, but 8 turbines were mentioned in a June 2011 letter to local residents from Italian developer Falck Renewables Ltd via Coriolis Energy, with agents TNEI (Newcastle) who are part of Petrofac (Saudi Arabia). A Met mast was approved on August 2nd 2011, but has not yet been erected. Proposal zone is south of the Whalton Road at Edington, 275m from Edington residents and 650m from Molesden residents. No height, but hub height of 80m can be inferred from met mast height (ie blade tip 127.5m height). The developers are still actively engaged in survey work and in March 2012 reported in the Herald that they are not yet in a position to yield further details such as turbine location and number, and projected timescale.

Tranwell: Met mast erected, wind farm application expected

In Jan 2012, NCC Planning Committee approved an anemometer mast, erected in April 2012. It is now expected that a wind farm application will follow. You can view the application at:

The developer, Wind Ventures, is planning 4 turbines x 126m height (to blade tip), on site of old World War II Tranwell Airfield. No public consultation or planning application yet.

Opencast mining site also proposed in Tranwell, to the east of this site. For detail see link:

The Gubeon: Single turbine proposed, no application yet

Proposed site at equestrian centre between Edington and Tranwell sites. 37m hub height, 54m to blade tip. Photomontages available (contact ARM).

Fenrother: Met mast erected, wind farm application expected

A met mast application was approved 6 March 2012, and erected 6 weeks later. A total of 5 x 126m turbines (to blade tip) north of Fenrother hamlet, by German developer EnergieKontor, who have had 2 local exhibitions. Officially “pre-application”, the full windfarm application is expected from Summer 2012. Minimum residential setback has been set at 800m.

Todd Hill: withdrawn

This proposal, near Pigdon and Stanton, was withdrawn in February 2011, following planning refusal on grounds which included visual intrusion. Developers Novera announced that they would not be launching an appeal against the decision, and were instead withdrawing their proposal.

Wingates Wind farm: wind farm approved but not yet constructed
Infinis were given planning approval for six 110m turbines in April last year to be sited to the NW of the village. Presently there are ongoing works associated with the grid connection. Pre construction works have been carried out on site but, as yet Infinis have not announced that they have cleared any of the conditions attached to the planning consent.

Park Head: appeal withdrawn

An initial scheme was announced by RES for 9 turbines up to 127m situated close to Rayburn Lake South of the village. Despite outstsanding requests for information from NCC RES appealed against non determination in December 2010. It was due to go to public inquiry but in June 2011 just hours before the deadline for exchange of evidence RES withdrew their appeal.

BT Wingates Moor: refused

The application for three 121m turbines to the South of the village was refused at County Hall on 6th March 2012.

In September 2009 BT announced a proposal for a development of six 127m turbines to the East of the village. Despite obtaining approval for and erecting an anemometer mast the proposal was “put on hold”. Immediately prior to the Wingates Moor application being heard BT announced that they would not be proceeding with the East Wingates scheme.
Todburn Coronation Power: Approval lapsed & plans uncertain

A proposal for a development of 8 turbines up to 100m in height was announced by Coronation Power to the SE of the village. Erection of an anemometer mast was approved in July 2006. The scoping period has now expired but the developer has not announced what its future intentions are with regard to this proposal.

View Law, Longhorsley: 2 turbines proposed, no application yet

1.5km from Longhorsley, the current plan is for 2 x 120m turbines as a community wind co-operative. They have said they would not push this proposal ahead without local support, so please email paul@energy4all.co.uk to make your opinions known.

Longhirst: withdrawn

The proposal for 6 x 120m turbines was withdrawn in November 2010 but Novera/Infinis who cited a number of obstacles: the results of the preliminary landscape assessment, ground conditions near old opencast workings, and nearby radio and telecom links.
